James McMillen, eldest son of John and Ann McMillen was born in Delhi, N. J., in 1832, and died in Hesper, Iowa, Feb. 15, 1905. The family moved to Michigan when he was four years old, remaining there four years. From Michigan they went to McHenry county, Ill., where they lived until they came to Iowa in the spring of 1852, and settled on the homestead west of Hesper village where he lived the remainder of his days. He was married to Nancy McNaughton, Apr, 12, 1864. They raised a family of eight children, all of whom, with their mother, survive him. The oldest three sons and the oldest daughter, John, Alfred, and Houston, and Mrs. Fred Koppen live in the vicinity of the old home. George McMillen and Mrs. John Freeman live in Eugene City, Oregon. J. C. McMillen and Mrs. Guy Freeman live at Hesper, N. D. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church on the afternoon of the 19th, and the packed house was a slight indication of the respect and esteem had for Mr. McMillen by all who ever became intimately acquainted with him, Rev. H. C. Carter officiated, and M. E. Meader, whose residence in Hesper township began with the beginning of Hesper history, conducted the funeral.
