George Edward Dillingham, son of Olive Whittier and James W. Dillingham, was born at St. Albans, Somerset county, “State of Maine,” Feb. 10, 1844, and died at Hesper, Iowa, Jan. 16, 1905. He was the third son in a family of five boys and two girls. The two sisters died in childhood and the youngest brother in young manhood. The others, Henry, Benjamin and Floyd, reached middle life but preceded George by a few years. Mr. Dillingham enpoyed{sic} good educational advantages, having attended the common and high schools in his native town, the academy at Hartland, Maine, Friends school at Providence, R. I., and Oak Grove Seminary, Vasselboro, Maine. His intentions were to study law or medicine, but he left the seminary to enter the army, enlisting as a private in the 17th Main Infantry. Near the close of the war he was transferred to the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery, and appointed Hospital Steward. He came to Winneshiek county in December, 1866, and for several years engaged in teaching and ever since manifested an active interest in educational matters. On Sept. 24, 1872, he was united in marriage with Frances Cook, who, with their daughter Gertrude, survives him. In 1887 Mr. Dillingham was appointed Detective and Collector by the Veterans’ Police Patrol and Detective Agency of Chicago, in which work he was engaged when his health permitted until a few years before his death. He was all his life an omnivorous reader, but for the last few months had confined his reading almost entirely to Shakespeare and the Bible. The funeral service will be held at the home on the afternoon of the 18th.
Mrs. and Miss Dillingham wish to express their deep gratitude to the many friends who have so kindly rendered assistance in his time of affliction. They have the sympathy of the entire community.
