A death which shocked our community occurred Saturday morning, when Mrs. Mat Houdek passed away at her home in this city, after a week’s illness. Barbara Doubek, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Doubek, was born at this place Nov. 26, 1871. On November 16th, 1897, she was united in marriage with Mr. Mat Houdek. This union was blessed with three sons, Peter, now aged 7, Frank, who died in infancy, and Joseph, aged 18 months. Besides her husband and children, there are left to mourn her loss her parents, three brothers, Joseph and Frank of Howard county, James of this place, and two sisters, Mrs. Mike Puffer and Miss Rosa, also of this place. From the first her illness was thought to be fatal and all that medical skill and efficient nursing could do for her were in vain. God had seen it fit to call her to her reward and did so, but in such a death one cannot realize that the home ties are severed forever. She is not dead but only gone before. Mrs. Houdek was always known to be a loving wife and mother, a good sister and daughter and a true and faithful friend, beloved by all who had the honor of her acquaintance. Funeral services took place in St. John’s church to-day at 9:30 a. m., interment afterward being made in the Catholic cemetery. A large concourse of friends from this and adjoining counties followed the remains to their last resting place. In this, their dark hour of trial, the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the sorrowing ones. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, showing the respect the many friends had for the deceased.
