Mrs. Ryan is at Rest.
The funeral of the late Mrs. Martin Ryan was held at the Church of the Assumption last Monday morning at 9 o’clock, and was one of the largest funerals held in Cresco for some time, a large concourse of friends from Cresco and her old home near Plymouth Rock following her remains to their last resting place in the Plymouth Rock cemetery. Requiem mass was celebrated by Father McCartey, her pastor about 35 years ago, when he had charge of the Plymouth Rock mission. The tribute given by Rev. McCartey was one fitting in its elegant beauty, for the life of Mrs. Ryan was one of goodness, and her death has caused universal sorrow in the community where she has lived so long and where she was held for so many years in the highest regard. Her pastor also referred touchingly to his personal loss in the death of this good woman, for during the seven years time he had charge of the Plymouth Rock mission each three weeks it was his privilege to stop at the Martin Ryan home where this pioneer mother was in her care and assistance a mother to him.
The pall bearers at the funeral were her two brothers, Jos. and Thos. Whalen, and four of her sons, George, Charles, Walter and Frank.
Katherine Whalen, the subject of this sketch, passed away at her home in Cresco on Saturday last, after a short illness, having attained the age of 60 years in March last. Her earlier years were pased{sic} in Illinois, but she became a resident of Plymouth Rock about 50 years ago, and has made that her home until about 15 months ago when she and her husband came to Cresco to rest from a lifetime of toil and enjoy the fruit of their labors. In February. 1866, she was united in marriage to Martin Ryan, and was the mother of 11 children, four of whom are dead. Those surviving are Joseph, George, Mrs. Mary J. Donlan, Johanna, Charles, Walter and Frank. .These with the husband, are left to mourn the death of a true and loving wife and mother. She is also survived by two brothers, Joseph and Thomas Whalen and one sister, Mrs. John Knox. One brother and one sister have preceeded her in death.

Transcriber’s Note: Her name is spelled Catherine on her gravestone.
