Greta (Klimesh) Kriener was born on July 4, 1931, the daughter of George and Augusta (Houdek) Klimesh on the family farm near Spillville. She attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School through 8th grade and thereafter worked at her parent's farm. She met Herman Kriener at a dance at the Inwood Ballroom, and later married him on September 10, 1952. She and Herman were married 65 years, and together they had seven children: Carol, Beverly, Alan, Donald, Larry, Dale, and Kathy. Greta and Herman farmed one of his parent's farms from 1952 until 1955 at which time they purchased their own farm near the Spillville - Ridgeway area. Greta and Herman farmed their 1200 acres for many years, built their home in Spillville in 1985 and semi-retired in the early 1990's.
Greta was well-known for her delicious home cooking, especially desserts and kolaches! She was a loving and selfless mother and loyal and giving wife. She always kept herself busy with the family gardens, chickens, feeding the calves, milking cows, and keeping house, but most of all she relished playing games with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid UNO card player, Candy Land extraordinaire, and an expert in many kid's games as well as an excellent putter on the miniature golf greens! She also enjoyed puzzles and reading books and various women's magazines. Greta loved animals and had a soft spot for our family dogs (especially her dalmations), the farm cats and all other creatures who lived there. She adored the four-legged animals who visited at the nursing home and enjoyed her precious collection of stuffed dogs. She was a tireless worker for the St. Wenceslaus Church and School and always found time to visit and say a rosary at the Grotto on the Church grounds. Her relatives helped build the Grotto, and she was proud of her early pioneer family as they helped settle Spillville from the 1850's on. Despite her long hours working side-by-side with her loyal husband, Herman, she always found time to balance her life with family and God.
Greta is survived by her six children: Carol Kreter (Joan Spehar), Robbinsdale, MN; Beverly (Dave) Meyer, Slinger, WI; Don (Jodi) Kriener, Ridgeway, IA; Larry (Julie) Kriener, Ridgeway, IA; Dale Kriener, Ridgeway, IA; and Kathy (Jim) Hauschild, Manchester, IA; Eleven grandchildren: Jeff (Michelle) Eide, Kevin (Jennifer Mannelli) Eide, Brad (Rachel) Eide, Darren (Kayla) Kriener, Jennifer (Dillon) Hammersland, Lexi, Cole, Kala, Kaitlyn and Brandon Kriener, and Marie (Beau) Hunt; 8 great-grandchildren: Elana Polakowski, Ava, Ingrid, Oliver and Magnus Eide; Alyssa and Audrey Kriener, and Adaline Hunt; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Sister-in-laws: Alice Kay Klimesh; Rosemary and Anastasia Kriener; and Anita Busta; brothers-in-law: Conrad (Kathleen) Kriener; Peter (Diane) Kriener; Jerome (Madonna) Kriener.
