Obituary
Philip Kratz was born in the year 1820, the 20th of March, in Frammsheimein in the Province Elsas in Hessem-Darmstad and died at his home near Ridgeway, Iowa, Oct. 15, 1899. at 4:40 a. m., bringing his life to the age of 79 years 7 months and 5 days. The cause of his death was kidney trouble of which he was a patient sufferer for many years. The deceased was united in marriage to Margerata Gazell in the year 1844. This union was blessed with 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters, one daughter preceding him to the world beyond.
Father Kratz emigrated to this country with wife and three children and settled in Franklin Co., Indiana, in the year 1852 where he lived 7 years; from there he came with his family to Iowa, and settled in Winneshiek Co., near Ridgeway where he lived until his death.
He leaves to mourn his departure a loving companion, five sons, four daughters, one sister, 45 grand children besides many relatives and friends.
Father Kratz was a highly respected citizen, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand, lie showed himself neighborly in every respect, he was one of the earliest settlers in this vicinity. Wherever you would chance to meet him, you always would hear a cheerful word, he was converted in his early manhood and joined the Evangelical Association of which he was a faithful member until his death. Through all the various discouragements of life he remained true to God and loyal to the church. Grandfather’s seat which he so regularly filled I the house of worship is forever vacated.
His service in the Sunday School, the prayer circle, and testimonial meetings is forever silenced By his death his companion loses a kind and loving husband; his sons and daughters a devoted and counciling father, the church one of its most honored and devoted members. But our loss is heaven’s eternal gain. COM

Phil Kratz, Sr., one of the oldest settlers in this part of the country, died at his residence three miles west of town, Sunday morning. Funeral was held at 1 P. M., at the Evangelical church. A large number of relatives and friends followed the remains to their last res{t}ing place. Mr. Kratz had been married 55 years, and his aged wife is left to wait the change which comes to all. A good man has laid down life’s burdens and gone to a well earned reward.
