OBITUARY.
As stated in last weeks REPUBLICAN, the reŽmains of Mr. T. H. Vaughan, who died in MinneŽapolis on the 3d of July, were brought to Decorah and interred in Oakwood cemetery on the 6th inst., and a fuller sketch of his life will doubtless be of interest to many old friendsTILLY RICK VAUGHAN, eldest son of the late Benjamin Vaughan, was born in Canada, Jan. 8th, 1841, and came to Fort Atkinson, Iowa with his parents in 1858, where most of his life was spent in taming the wild prairie soil in their early years, and afterward carrying on and improving the beautiful farm home, where, for many rears the family lived, an unbroken circle. For a time early in the seventies he and his brother operated the Dunning Spring Mill in Decorah, after which he returned to the farm labor and stock raising. Here he remained until the spring of 1895, when he went to the Pacific Coast, settling in Escondido, Cal., and becoming interested in fruit culture.
In August, 1896, be was married to Miss Lilia D. Cutting, formerly of Lewis, Iowa. In April 1898, their infant son was taken away. Mr. Vaughan bad been in failing health during the winter previous, and in September last his case was pronounced hopeless by his physicians, He returned to Iowa, remaining until December at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. G. Darey, at Cresco, when he placed himself under medical treatment at Minneapolis, This had fully removed the disease, (an internal cancer,) and strong hopes were entertained of his return to Iowa, when death resulted from exhaustion from the effects of an injury received in a fall some weeks previous.
The funeral was held in the Congregational church, in this city, Rev. M. Willett using the burial service of the Episcopal church, (of which Mr. Vaughan was a member in California,) and also paying a brief tribute to n friend of early days. The wife and sister. Mrs. Darey, and brother, B. H. Vaughan, of Pasadena, Cal., survive him. They, with many other friends, mourn the untimely departure of one who was a type of sterling integrity and true Christian manhood; who had borne his sufferings bravely and patiently, going forth into the unseen in perfect faith of a glorious immortality through oar risen Lord.
