Ossian man dies in Minnesota

Donald Harold Schroeder, 65, of Ossian, died Tuesday, April 16, 1991 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn. Funeral service were held Friday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian with burial at St. Francis Cemetery, Ossian. Schmitz Funeral Home, Ossian, was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Schroeder was born Oct. 30, 1925, to Florence H. (Wiltgen) Shroeder (sic) and the late Frank Schroeder in rural Ossian. He was baptized and confirmed St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. He graduated from the Ossian Public High School.

He served in World War II for more than two years as a member of the United States Army Company 1-271 Infantry. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, American Theatre (sic) Ribbon, EAME Theatre (sic) Ribbon WWII, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal WWII.

Following the service Donald was employed at John Deere Company in Dubuque.

He married Joanne Marie Frommelt Nov. 17, 1955 at St. Francis de Sales in Ossian. They had six children.

Donald was also employed as a road construction foreman for Reilly Construction Company of Ossian and Carlson Construction Company of Decorah.

He was a member of the St. Francis Rosary Society, Knights of Columbus Council 2073, Brockman-Hammersland Post 503 and served one term on the Ossian Town Council.

Survivors include his mother, Florence of Ossian; his wife, Joanne of Ossian; three sons, Robert of Ossian, Brian of West Union; Donald C. of West Union; three daughters, Sherann Holthaus of Ossian, Denise Hageman of Ossian and Jane Schroeder of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Gerald Schroeder of Bellevue; and six grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was his father, Frank, in 1951; and a brother, Robert in 1952.

Casket bearers were Steve Schroeder, David Heying, Randy Heying, Christopher Frommelt, Michael Heying and Jim Schroeder.

Donald Harold Schroeder, 65, died Tuesday afternoon, April 16, 1991, after a short illness at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Olmsted County, MN. Funeral services were held Friday, April 19, 1991, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. Rev. Richard Kuhn officiated, organist was Diane Stee and soloist was Don DiLaura. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers were Jack Jaster, Forest (Toey) Kelly, Raymond Wenthold, Bob Russett, Fred Scheidel and Clarence Zweibohmer, Casket bearers were Steve Schroeder, David Heying Randy Heying, Christopher Frommelt, Michael Heying and Jim Schroeder.

He was born the son of Florence H. (Wiltgen) Schroeder and the late Frank Schroeder on October 30, 1925, rural Ossian, Winneshiek County. Donald was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church of which he was a lifelong member. He received his education by attending De Sales Grade School for eight years and graduating from Ossian Public High School.

He served his country during World War II for two years, (January 1944 to February 1946) as a member of the U. S. Army Co. 1-271st Infantry Regt., receiving several awards.

On November 17, 1955, he married Joanne Marie Frommelt at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian by the late Rev. E. J. Frost. They made their home in Ossian and had six children.

Donald was employed as a road construction foreman for Reilly Construction Co. of Ossian and Carlson Construction Co. of Decorah for many years.

He was a member of the St. Francis Rosary Society, Knights of Columbus Council 2073, Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post No. 503 and served one term on the Ossian City Council.

Survivors include his mother, Florence Schroeder of Ossian; his wife, Joanne, Ossian; three sons: Robert, Ossian; Brian and wife, Barbara, West Union; Donald C. and wife, Karen, West Union; three daughters: Scherann and husband, Gerald Holthaus, Ossian; Denise and husband, Tom Hageman, Ossian and Jane Schroeder of Cedar Rapids. Other survivors are one sister, Norma Jean Ernst, Kimball, SD; one brother Gerald Schroeder and wife, Janet of Bellevue; four grandsons: Mitchell Holthaus, Christopher Phillips, Scott Schroeder and Jordan Schroeder; and two granddaughters, Carol Phillips and Melissa Holthaus.

Preceding him in death were his father, Frank in 1951; a brother, Robert in 1952; a son-in-law, Dean Phillips in 1985, and a brother-in-law, Arthur Ernst in 1986.
