Marilyn Birdsell, age 60, of rural Postville, IA, died on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at her home.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the First Lutheran Church, 604 West Broadway in Decorah with Rev. Chad Huebner presiding. Burial will be at the Phelps Cemetery in Decorah
Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Friday July 14, 2017 at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home 604 South Avenue, Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday morning.
Marilyn Jean (Stortz) Birdsell was born on October 27, 1956 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Hazel (Fretheim) Stortz. She attended North Winneshiek Schools. Marilyn married Richard Birdsell on April 29, 1978 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Together they had three children: Kari, Justin and Jeremy. Marilyn and Richard farmed together with his parents near Ossian, Iowa, until 1987 at which time they purchased their own farm near Frankville, Iowa and have resided there for the past 30 years. She took care of the house and kids and helped with everything on the farm. Marilyn enjoyed shopping, sewing, quilting and taking care of her flower gardens. Marilyn loved her grandchildren and would consider some of her best times was the time she spent with them. She also loved all of the time she was able to spend with her sisters.
Marilyn is survived by her husband Richard. Three children: Kari (Jason) Pace, Peosta, IA; Justin (Michele) Birdsell, Decorah, IA; Jeremy Birdsell, Postville, IA. Grandchildren: Kolt and Klay Pace and Wyatt, Addison and Riley Birdsell. Mother: Hazel Stortz, Decorah, IA. Five sisters: Linda Rosen, Minneapolis, MN; Jackie (Phil) Rustad, Decorah, IA; twin sister,Marsha (Larry) McCabe, Decorah, IA; Jerilyn (Larry) Hageman, Decorah, IA and Janean (Stan) Shimek, Calmar, IA. Mother and Father-in-law: Virgil and Audrey (Linderbaum) Birdsell, Ossian, IA. Sister-in-law: Kathy (Mike) Babcock, New Hampton, IA. Brother-in-law: Paul Birdsell, Ossian, IA along with many nieces and nephews.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her Father: Robert Stortz. Brother: Randy Stortz. Nephews: Cory Hageman and Joey Bachelder. Great niece: Kari Anderson -Rustad.
