Clara Ostby, antique dealer, dies

Clara Margaret Ostby, 82, of Decorah, died Dec. 2 in St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital,Mason City.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church. Pastors Alden H. Hovda and John Pannkuk officiated. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Eldo Aspenson, Gordon Aspenson, Richard Aspenson, Gene Aspenson, Neal Davis and Norman Selness.

Mrs. Marion Beatty was organist and accompanied the soloist, Mrs. Delores Womeldorf. Arrangements were made by Olson-Fjelstul Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ostby (Clara Margaret Josvanger) was born Sept. 25,1898 in Dccorah to Hans and Gustina (Bakken) Josvanger. She attended rural schools in Winneshiek County and Waldorf Academy in Forest City.

She married Oscar Aspenson Sr. in 1917 in Decorah. He died in 1970, In 1974 she married Victor Ostby, and he preceded her in death in 1978.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Ostby is survived by two daughters, Corolla (Mrs. Huber Lennon) of Decorah, Harriet (Mrs. Marvin Norland) of Cresco; two sons, Donald Aspenson of Cresco and Oscar Aspenson Jr. of Mason City.

Other survivors are 16 grandchildren, 14 greatgrandchildren; one brother, H.O. Josvanger of Racine, Wis. and two sisters, Esther Ruth of Decorah and Isabel Opsahl of Columbia, S. Car.

Mrs. Ostby had lived in Forest City until moving back to Decorah in 1936. She was a well-known authority on antiques and had been a collector and dealer for many years. She also was active in church and civic organizations.

She was a member of the Board of Deaconess at Decorah Lutheran Church and belonged to the Winneshiek County Mental Health Assoc., Sons of Norway and the Senior Citizens.
