Donald E. “Doc” Moore, D.V.M., age 96, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday evening, March 25, 2017 at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah.
Continuing his commitment to learning, Donald donated his body for educational and research purposes to the Deeded Body Program at the University of Iowa, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2017 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 7, one hour before the service, at First Lutheran Church.
Donald Edward Moore “Doc Moore” DVM was born on February 22, 1921 in the Winneshiek County Hospital, Decorah, Iowa. He was lucky to live due to the fact that he was born with a severe cleft lip and palate. He was the only child of Samuel and Elizabeth (Williams) Moore.
Growing up on a farm, Donald was active in 4H and FFA where he raised champion sheep. To attend high school, he boarded with a family in Cresco during the school week. He was a percussionist in the band. In 1940 he graduated from Cresco High School. Donald attended Iowa State, graduating with a degree in veterinary medicine in 1945.
He moved to Decorah to establish his veterinary practice where he met Ilene (Meyer) Moore. They were married on Easter Sunday April 21, 1946 in Latimer, Iowa. For 69 years they thoroughly enjoyed each other's company. They were blessed with five children: Elizabeth, Donald, David, Martha, and Janet.
Donald was known around town and the surrounding county as "Doc Moore". During the years he practiced as a veterinarian, he treated sick animals on virtually every farm within a 30 mile radius and always had a piece of candy to share with the farm kids. He often drove through snowstorms and navigated muddy roads to care for animals in distress. When he had his veterinary office in his home, people would sometimes arrive unexpectedly carrying their injured dog or cat in their arms. In the late 1970s, he and wife Ilene purchased the Ben Franklin store in Decorah.
Donald was a proud and active member of his community. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Jaycees, Decorah Chamber of Commerce, SCORE, Masonic Lodge and Shrine, Elks Club, Oneota Country Club, and several professional veterinary associations. For over 40 years he was on the board of directors of Decorah Bank. He served for many years on the board of the Winneshiek County Hospital and was instrumental in fundraising for the new hospital and new medical equipment. Donald volunteered many hours to the American Cancer Society and was honored by the state of Iowa as Volunteer of the Year in 1994.
Donald enjoyed life and lived it fully. He loved his family, friends, and community. Some life long interests include: photography, technology and computers, mentoring students interested in medical careers, and traveling. He always enjoyed tasty food, a good joke, going to coffee club, meeting new people, and visiting with old friends. One of his favorite places was the Mississippi River. He enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, boating, and sitting on the deck of their cabin in Lansing, Iowa watching the boats go by.
Donald is survived by his four children: Elizabeth Porter (Larry Freed) of Austin, TX, David (Nancy) Moore of Edina, MN, Martha (Kurt) Aschim of Marinette, WI, and Janet (Greg) Evans of Scottsdale, AZ; nine grandchildren: Katherine Porter, Jacob Porter (Sarah Pontoski), Emily Porter (Ryan Morrissey), Samuel Moore, William Moore, Ellen (Josue) Trelles, Annie (Read) McKendree, Hans (Amanda Yogendran) Aschim, Natalie (Daniel) Parkman; twelve great-grandchildren: Luke, Paul, and Elizabeth Hoffman, Waylon Porter, Margaret, Helen, Oliver, and Andrew Morrissey, Alejandro, Carl Marco, and Stella Trelles, and Malachi Parkman.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ilene Moore on December 26, 2015, son Donald M. Moore on February 24,1954, and grandson Scott Evans on April 20, 2008.
