Helen Herold, age 81, of Calmar, IA died Sunday, July 31, 2016 at Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass Of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 5, 2016 at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 306 South Maryville, Calmar, IA, with Rev. Robert Gross presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, 202 South Washington Street in Calmar, IA, with a scripture service at 6:00 p.m. and also after 9:30 a.m., at the church on Friday morning.

Helen Elizabeth (Hunter) Herold was born on August 21, 1934, the daughter of Lyle and Eva (Hawkins) Hunter, in Ossian, IA. She graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in Ossian. Helen married Robert Herold on March 2, 1954 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Together they farmed west of Spillville and also owned Herold grocery in Spillville. She later worked at DECO in Decorah before working for John Deere in Waterloo. Helen and Robert moved to Missouri where she worked for Bass Tracker Boat Co. After Roberts’s death she moved back to Calmar in 2000. Helen was a member of the St. Aloysius Rosary Society, American Legion Auxiliary and helped at the food pantry in Calmar. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, going with her brother to see her sister in Des Moines and spending time with her family.

Helen is survived by her daughter: Robin (David) Zweibahmer, Calmar, IA. Two sons: Steve (Cathy) Herold, Holmen, WI and Ron (Heidi) Herold, Calmar, IA. Granddaughter: Teressa (Brandon) Kadlec, Decorah, IA. Great Granddaughter: Emma Kadlec. Sister: Patricia Gerlich, Des Moines, IA. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Leonard (Mjel) Herold, Brookfield, VT, Martha Martin, San Jose, CA, Don (Ann) Herold, Cresco, IA and Ruth Herold, Omaha, NE. Many nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her husband: Robert on December 9, 1999. Parents: Lyle and Eva (Hawkins) Hunter. Brother: John Hunter on January 26, 2016. Brother-in-law: Walter (Dorothy) Herold. Sister-in-laws: Sister Elaine Herold. Dorothy (Ed) Einwalter.
