Fred Hageman, 76, Dies in Festina

(Calmar Correspondence)

The funeral services of Fred Hageman, Sr., 76, who died at his home in Festina, Iowa, Saturday, Nov. 20, following a two weeks illness due to complications were held Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s church with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. A. J. Rubly officiated. The pall bearers were H. J. Schupanitz, Hugo Hageman, William Scholbrock, Albert Bushman, John Kipp, Clarence Rothmeyer and Joseph Kuennen, cross bearer.

The deceased was born on a farm between Calmar and Fort Atkinson April 8, 1861, the son of Fred and Angella Hageman.

On Sept. 18, 1883, he united in marriage with Catherine Wenthold. To this union were born nine children: Mrs. Dominick Bucheit, Festina, Fred, Felix and Ignatius Hageman of Calmar, Mrs. Matt Drilling Cresco, Mrs. Ben Schmitt and Andrew Hageman of Fort Atkinson and Aloysius Hageman and Mrs. Joseph Funke of Festina.

Besides his wife and children he is survived by one sister Mrs. William Timp, Sr., of Calmar, five brothers, William Hageman, of Willavdale Kansas, George Hageman, of Tipton, Kansas, John Hageman of Festina, Barney and Henry Hageman of Fort Atkinson. His parents and one sister preceded him in death. Mr. Hageman was one of Winneshiek county’s prosperous farmers and in 1928 he and his wife retired from the farm and became residents of Festina.

He was a devout member of the Roman Catholic church and died fortified by its last rites.

Out of town relatives attending the funeral were Mrs. Herman Wenthold and son Clem, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rinks, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burgess all of Cresco and scores of other relatives from Calmar, Fort Atkinson and Ossian.

NOTE: The wedding date varies from his wife’s obituary – one says 1882 and the other says 1883.
