Funeral Rites Read for Mrs. Bernard Schmitz

A Solemn Requiem High Mass was read at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Festina Thursday morning at 9:30 o’clock for Mrs. Bernard Schmitz, who passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 17 at her home. Burial was in St. Mary’s cemetery.

The pall bearers were Philip Ettledorf, Joseph Bucheit, Will Massman, Hubert Schneberger, Henry Rothmeyer and Joseph Einck. Casper Bucheit was cross bearer.

The Solemn Requiem High Mass was sung by her son, Rev. Herman Schmitz, O. S. C. of Moose Lake, Minn., assisted by the Rev. S. Schumus of Perham, Minn., and Rev. Urban Bucheit of New Albin, as deacon and subdeacon, respectively. Rev. Joseph Vollmecke of Calmar was master of ceremonies. Rev. S. Schumus delivered the funeral sermon.

As Elizabeth Lechtenberg, Mrs. Schmitz was born in Festina, Ia., June 1, 1879, the daughter of Herman and Mary Lechtenberg. She was married Feb. 28, 1903 to Bernard Schmitz by Rev. Father Ehl. They with their family made their home about two miles south of Festina on a farm known formerly as the Conrad Dessel farm.

She is survived by her husband and nine children, two brothers, one sister and six grandchildren. They are: Rev. Herman Schmitz, O. S. C. of Moose Lake, Minn.; (Mary) Mrs. Gust Weiling of Cresco; Nickolas and Joseph of Calmar; (Angela) Mrs. Marc Bengfort of Festina; Henry of Ossian; Edmund of Waucoma; (Catherine) Sister M. Rosalia, La Crosse, Wis.; and Leo at home. One daughter, Adelaide, died in 1923. Her two brothers, Herman and Clemens Lechtenberg and (Mary) Mrs. Henry Hageman, all of Festina also survive.

Her Reverend son was with her when she passed away. She was an exemplary mother and faithful member of the Catholic church. She was a member of the Rosary society.

Clergy present in the sanctuary were Rev. A. J. Rubly, paster, Very Rev. Msgr. M. J. Thiltgen, D. D., Ossian and Fathers Stenz of LaCrosse, Wis., R. Schares of Ossian, F. Schuh of St. Lucas, C. Steinlage, Dubuque, A. Peikert of Calmar, Rev. Friedman of the Catholic University, Washington, D. C.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spalla of Eastman, Wis., and Jean Frances Schissel of Cedar Rapids as well as many other relatives and friends from the neighboring parishes attended the funeral of this good mother.
