Evelyn B. Pierce, age 99, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA with Rev. David Sorenson and Rev. Charis Combs-Lay officiating. Private Family Inurnment will be at Burr Oak Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday May 7, one hour before the service, at Decorah Lutheran Church.

Evelyn Beatrice (Johnson) Pierce was born on January 9, 1917 in Decorah, the daughter of Ole and Gena (Bringsjord) Johnson, the oldest of their seven children. She attended Decorah schools and graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1935. On November 10, 1937, Evelyn married Merlyn Carl Pierce. They were parents to two sons, Darrell, born in 1939, and Stephen, born in 1948. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage, making their homes in Decorah and Dubuque. They were active in both communities. They retired to Decorah in 1980. They enjoyed, travel, golf, dancing, family times, and wintering in the Southwest. Evelyn was a homemaker, volunteer for her church, and much beloved grandmother. With her many friends she played cards, golfed, and bowled.

Evelyn and Merlyn were members of St. Peter Lutheran Church while living in Dubuque, and long time members of Decorah Lutheran Church. Evelyn was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Decorah for over 60 years.

Evelyn became a resident at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah in February 2014.

She was preceded in death by her husband Merlyn on March 25, 1999; her son Darrell on September 17, 2015; four sisters: Helen Enyart, Frances Johnson, Thelma Pahl and Gladys Herold; and brother Merlyn Johnson.

Evelyn is survived by her son Stephen (Carol) Pierce of Waterloo, IA; daughter-in-law Sondra Pierce of Decorah; brother Donald O. Johnson of Decorah; five grandchildren: Scott (Lori) Pierce of Decorah, Cara (Todd ) Smith of Decorah and Bartt (Nicole) Pierce of Shoreview, MN, Douglas Pierce of Overland Park, KS and Carl Pierce of Julian, CA; seven great-grandchildren: Breanne Pierce, Bryce Pierce, Soleil Smith, Hogan Smith, Khadijah Pierce, Hayden Pierce and Andrew Pierce; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to Decorah Lutheran Church Piano Fund, 309 Winnebago Street, Decorah, IA 52101.
