Genevieve R. Jacobs, 86, of Decorah, Iowa, formerly from Sioux City, Iowa, passed on to Heaven Friday, April 22, 2016, surrounded by her loving family, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah.

The rite of cremation has been accorded following her wishes.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA with Rev. David Sorenson and Rev. Charis Combs-Lay officiating. Private Family Inurnment will be at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.

Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, one hour before the service, at Decorah Lutheran Church.

Genevieve Ruth Jacobs was born on February 7, 1930 in Concord, Nebraska, the daughter of August LeRoy and Ruth H. (Forsberg) Johnson. Genevieve was confirmed in her faith in 1943. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City with the class of 1947.

Genevieve was married to Jack I. Hunnel on September 20, 1949 in Sioux City, Iowa. To this union 5 children were born: George, Gary, Glenn, Jaclyn and Connie Ellen.

They later divorced.

Genevieve married George F. Jacobs on March 20, 1982 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Genevieve worked at the Sioux City Board of Education as an administrative secretary and later worked as an administrative assistant to the President and Board of Directors at Western Iowa Tech Community College. She retired In 1994.

Genevieve and George were members of Morningside Lutheran Church while living in Sioux City, Iowa. They moved to Decorah, Iowa in 1997 and became members of Decorah Lutheran Church.

Genevieve served in many areas of leadership in the ELCA. She also taught VBS and was active in serving her Lord and church whenever asked. Genevieve and George were active members in prayer partners at Decorah Lutheran. As a witness to her faith, she and George would pray for each of their children and spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren, by Name, each night after reading their evening devotions.

Genevieve was an accomplished seamstress. Many tailored suits, dresses, and costumes were sewed with love for her family. As her grandchildren and great grandchildren arrived, she made baby quilts for each one of them to honor their birth. She made memory quilts for the grandchildren to celebrate their graduation from high school. She enjoyed keeping in contact with all of her family and friends. For many years she made custom cards on her computer to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. Genevieve entered the 21st century by being an active member of Facebook. She would celebrate each family member’s birthday and anniversary with a personal note on Facebook. She also loved to cook and bake. Her homemade bread, rolls and fried chicken “chicken on the bone” were family favorites. Genevieve was also a member of the Garden Club in Decorah.

Genevieve moved into Aase Haugen Senior Services on March 22, 2016. She passed on to Heaven Friday, April 22, 2016, surrounded by her loving family, at Aase Haugen Senior Services at age 86.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband George; sons George (Deb) Hunnel of Rosemount, MN and Gary (Dannette) Hunnel of Sun Lakes, AZ; daughter Jaclyn (Keith) Vollstedt of Dakota Dunes, SD; step-son Mark (Pat) Jacobs of Bettendorf, IA; step-daughter Jody (Keith) Forde of Decorah, daughter-in-law Susan (Ray) Sherman of Dakota Dunes, SD; her beloved 21 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren; along with nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ruby Gordon, brother-in-law Richard Gordon, son Glenn Hunnel, step-grand-son Eric Jacobs, and infant daughter Connie Ellen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to WMC Hospice, 901 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA 52101 or Aase Haugen Senior Services, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, IA 52101.

A special Thank You from the family is given to Dr. Tyler Menke and staff, all the staff of WMC Hospice, and all of the staff at Aase Haugen Senior Services.
