Melvin Allison, 88, Retired Decorah Businessman, Dies
Retired Decorah businessman Melvin Allison, 88 of 408 Upper Broadway died May 31 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, June 4 at First Lutheran Church with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery.
Pastor Paul H Christenson conducted final rites. Pallbearers were Eugene Soland, Ernest Soland, Francis Arness, Leonard Ask, Olaf Sivesind and Milford Sivesind. Mrs. William Kuhlman was organist and accompanied the congregation as they sang hymns. Funeral arrangements were made by Steine Funeral Home.
Mr. Allison was the inventor of an athletic field liming machine which he manufactured in a shop at the rear of his home on Broadway and distributed to high schools and colleges throughout the Midwest during his active business years.
A lifelong resident of Winneshiek County and Decorah since 1914, Mr. Allison was born January 10, 1885 in Glenwood Township, the son of Peter and Karen Allison. He received his education in the rural schools and Valders Business College at Decorah. He was married May 19, 1909 in Glenwood Township to the former Alma G. Arness. His wife died September 4, 1962.
Mr. Allison is survived by one daughter, Mr. George C. (Arline) Strum, Decorah and two granddaughters, Mrs. Francis (Miriam) Odden, St. Louis Park, Minn. And Mrs. Robert (Karen) Bear, Wauchula, Fla.; Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
