Rites Here for Richard Arness

Last rites for Richard W. Arness, 63, of Decorah were held at 2 p. m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. Arness died at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City following a three week illness.

The Rev. Alvon Nelson conducted the funeral, with the Steine Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were George Weflen, Ernest Soland, Eugene Soland, Howard Hexom, Thomas Holven and Edwin Arness.

Mrs. Willard Linnevold sang at the funeral accompanied by James Kohn.

Those on the flower committee were Mmes. Ralph Fitzgerald, Eugene Lee, Edwin Arness and Conrad Arness.

Arness was born June 13, 1895 in Frankville Township, the son of Louis and Gunhilde Arness. He was educated in rural schools.

He was married to Mayme G. Hookenson in Waukon on May 25, 1949.

He was a farmer and lived for the last nine years in Decorah. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Errol (Ethel) Felke, Ossian; a son, Francis Arness, Calmar; three stepsons, Leland Brown, Algona; Stanley Brown, Fort Madison; and Vernon Brown, Mankato, Minn; and two stepdaughters, Mrs. Elmer Sassen, Mankato, Minn.; and Mrs. Ted Usrey, Augusta, Ga.

Other survivors are five sisters, Mrs. Melvin Allison, Mrs. Louise Soland, Mrs. Stella Hexom and Miss Gladys Arness, all of Decorah; and Mrs. Morris Holven, Oakdale, and Mrs. L. A. Burbank, San Antonio, Texas. There are also five grandchildren.

His father and two brothers, Edgar and Albert, preceded him in death.
