City’s Oldest Resident, Mrs. Arness, Dies at 102
Mrs. Louis Arness, Decorah’s oldest resident and an active housewife until recently, died Dec. 30 at her home at 705 Franklin St., Decorah.
She was 102 years old. Mrs. Arness was well known in the Decorah area and was active even past her 100th year.
Mrs. Arness had lived in Decorah since 1919. Before that she resided in Frankville Township, where she was born March 24, 1860. Her parents were the late Elling and Aase Ramsey. She was baptized and confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Arness attended rural schools and was married to Louis Arness May 26, 1884, at Washington Prairie. Mr. Arness died in 1931.
Mrs. Arness was a member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah.
Survivors
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Stella Hexom and Mrs. Louise Soland of Decorah, Mrs. Mabel Holven of North Liberty, Iowa, Mrs. L. A. Burbank of San Antonio, and Miss Gladys Arness of Decorah, with whom Mrs. Arness had been residing.
Three sons, Edgar, Albert, Richard; and a daughter, Mrs. Melvin (Alma) Allison, preceded her in death.
Funeral services are being held today, Jan. 3, starting at 2 p. m. at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Alvon Nelson conducting the last rites.
Burial is being made in Lutheran Cemetery. Steine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers are Ernest Soland, Robert Soland, Eugene Lee, Conley Schweinefus, Francis Arness and Nanford Felke.
Miss Galene Nelson is organist, and Mrs. Willard Linnevold is soloist.
On the floral committee are Mrs. Francis Arness, Mrs. Ernest Soland, Mrs. Robert Soland and Mrs. Eugene Lee.
