Louis G. Arness Died After a Long Illness
Death called another of Decorah’s good citizens Friday evening, Nov. 27, at seven o’clock, when Louis G. Arness passed away at the family home, 705 Franklin street, after a lingering illness, the last ten weeks being confined to his bed.
The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Arness, and he was born on the Atlantic ocean Nov. 14, 1852 when his parents were immigrating to America to establish a home in this country. Iowa was their objective state, they coming to Winneshiek county, establishing a home on a farm in Frankville township, where the subject of this sketch grew to young manhood, and where he was baptized, confirmed and married by the late Rev. V. Koren.
When a young man he left the farming pursuits, coming to Decorah where he took a position as salesman in the dry goods and grocery store of the late Iver Larsen. After his marriage to Gunhilda E. Ramsey, which occurred on May 26, 1884, the family home was established on a farm in Frankville township, where they lived many years, built up a fine home, and became the parents of a family of fine sons and daughters. They retired from the farm in the spring of 1917, removing to Decorah where the family home has since been.
The bereaved wife and the following children survive: Alma (Mrs. Melvin Allison), Decorah; Edgar, Washington Prairie; Albert, Frankville township; Stella (Mrs. Helmer Hexom), Ossian, Louise (Mrs. Embert Soland), Washington Prairie; Richard, Decorah; Mabel (Mrs. Morris Holven), Highlandville, Gladys and Elsie at home. Seventeen grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Arness is the last in his family, four sisters and two brothers having preceded him in death. He was a worthy representative of one of the old pioneer families of this county. He was one of the county’s wide-awake, energetic farmers who through his well directed labors and sound business judgment met with substantial success. He was a good neighbor and true friend. All who knew him held him in high esteem and most of his friends were numbered among those who had known him since childhood. To the bereaved wife, sons and daughters who are left to cherish his memory the sincere sympathy of all is extended.
The funeral services were held yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon at two o’clock from the First Lutheran church. Rev. T. A. Hoff officiated and interment was in the Lutheran cemetery.
