This community was greatly shocked last Friday when the report was given of the death of Oscar Miller after a few hours of illness of hemorrhage of the brain. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. Lydia Jones of Chicago, Chas. Miller and family of Freeport, Francis Padden and wife of Burr Oak, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Gremm of Canoe, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Vick of Calmar, Chas. Brouillet and family, A. Miller of Decorah, Herbie Padden and family of Waterloo, John Davis of Waukon and Tome Folsom of Postville.

Oscar Frederick Miller was born at Buffalo, N. Y., May 13, 1836, and died at his home in Frankville, Iowa, Sept. 23, 1927, at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 10 days. He grew to manhood near Cleveland, Ohio, and came with his father’s family to Iowa in 1854 and located at Freeport, Winneshiek Co. He has lived in this county ever since, coming to Frankville to reside 35 years ago. On July 5, 1858, he was married to Lydia Ann Beebe of Freeport, Iowa. To this union were born four children, all of whom are living. They are Mrs. Lettie Padden, Mrs. Anna Brouillette, Chas. and Sarah Miller, all of Frankville, except Charles who lives at Freeport. There are also ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. After sixty-three years of happy wedded life Mrs. Miller passed to her reward May 14, 1921, a little more than six years prior to her husband’s death. Besides his children he is survived by one brother, Amasa Miller of Decorah, and two sisters, Mrs. A. B. Robinson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Emma Ford of Reno, Nevada.

Mr. Miller was a stone mason by trade. This and farming constituted his life labor. In middle life he joined the United Brethren church at Centennial. After moving to Frankville he united with the Methodist church. He was a man of integrity who stood for the basic principles of Christianity. On the eve of his departure he requested the reading of 1 John 3: 18-24, which included this verse: “Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.” In this confidence he lived and died and triumphed over death. As the oldest and one of the most honored citizens of Frankville township he will be much missed, not alone by those of his family but also by a host of neighbors and friends who share in this bereavement.

The funeral was held from the Frankville community church Sunday afternoon, Sept. 25, the pastor, Rev. H. A. Bethel, officiating. Burial was made in the Frankville cemetery, with the grandson as bearers and granddaughter as flow girls. The pastor’s theme was, “Faith of Our Fathers,” as brought out in the Scripture referred to above, one of Mr. Miller’s favorite passages.
