Melbert Leo Schopp
Melbert Leo Schopp, son of Charles and Lily (Becsey) Schopp, was born July 21, 1912 in Union Township, Fayette County, near West Union, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, July 8, 1993 in the Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa. He was 80.He attended school at Spooner, Wis. On Oct. 15, 1936 he married LaVerna Reincke in the parsonage of St. John Lutheran Church at Farmersburg, Iowa.
After their marriage, they moved to the Castalia area where Mel had worked as a farm hand and as a truck driver. For twenty years they owned and operated the locker at Castalia.
Mel was one of three children. He had a sister, Frieda and a brother, Clifton.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. Mel had served as Mayor of Castalia and was a member of the Castalia Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, LaVerna, of Castalia, two cousins from LaCrosse, Wis., and many friends.
Funeral services for Melbert Schopp were held Monday, July 12, 1993 in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia. The Rev. H. W. Wolfgram officiated. Dorothy Wolfgram was the organist. The congregation sang, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," and "How Great Thou Art." Angie Smith, soloist, sang "Amazing Grace."
The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia.
Casket bearers were William Szabo, George Wander, Charles Linderbaum, Merle Lubka, Vernon Kamp and Robert Szabo.
