Erwin K. "Smitty" Smith of Winter Haven, Fla., formerly of Castalia, was born May 14, 1904 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of George and Lizzie Minor Smith. He died March 15, 1993 at the Heart of Florida Hospital in Haines City, Fla. He was 88.

He graduated from South Dakota State and worked for the Parker Pen Company and the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Janesville, Wis.

On April 15, 1945 he married Violet Schultz at Woodstock, Ill. They moved to Milwaukee, Wis., and were apartment managers. In 1972 they retired to Castalia. In 1990 he moved to Florida.

Erwin is survived by his children: Chappy Smith, Winterhaven, Fla.; a daughter, Donna Nehls, Janesville, Wis.; a stepson, James Snyder, Bradenton, Fla.; nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren and one brother, Glen Smith of Miller, South Dakota.

Funeral services for Erwin Smith were held March 19, 1993 at the Ossian Funeral Chapel. Pastor Howard Wolfgram conducted the services. Mrs. Gary Breitsprecher was organist. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia.
