Roy and Genevieve Evelyn (Bachelder) Schultz
Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Roy Schultz were held Saturday, July 16, at Walden Pond, Castalia with Rev. Curtis Webster officiating. Burial was also at Walden Pond, which had been operated by the Schultzes for a number of years as a recreational area.The couple was killed in a plane crash near Fort Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, July 11, 1977. They were leading a group of Iowa Flying Farmers on a tour to Alaska.
Roy Schultz, son of Henry V. and Vina (Warnholtz) Schultz was born near Castalia February 16, 1913. Genevieve Evelyn Bachelder, daughter of Ward and Mary Jane (Hunter) Bachelder, was born near Castalia April 10, 1915.They received their education in the Castalia vicinity, graduating from the Postville high school. After graduation Roy farmed in the Castalia area and Genevieve taught in the rural schools near Castalia.
They were united in marriage at Castalia June 8, 1937. They continued to farm near Castalia until 1969 when they began developing Walden Pond as a recreational area.
Roy became interested in Alaska more than 40 years ago and after he took up flying, began to make regular trips there each summer. He became sought after as a guide for game hunters because of his knowledge of the country.He was a member of the Audubon Society, was active in the Farm Bureau, and served as District Commissioner of the Winneshiek County Soil Conservation district from January 1969 to January 1977.
Mrs. Schultz shared her husbands interests in the outdoors and they were both active members of the Castalia United Methodist church.
The couple is survived by their three children: Mrs. Jack (Sally) Hagensick, Waukon; James of Oregon, Ill., and Alan of Castalia, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He is also survived by three brothers: George and Henry of Castalia and Joe of Decorah: two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Schmidt, Castalia, and Mrs. Dean (Elsie) Kneeskern, Preston, Minn. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
She is survived by a brother, Harry of Castalia and a sister, Mrs. Helen West, Madison, Wis.Postville Herald newspaper clipping from my mother's obituary collection.
