Funeral services for Melvin J. Buddenberg were held Monday, Feb. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Castalia. The Rev. Curtis Webster officiated. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia.

Melvin John Buddenberg, son of Henry William and Bertha (Roth) Buddenberg, was born July 19, 1906 in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. He died February 5, 1982 at his home in rural Castalia.

He was the first child baptized in the newly organized Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia and was confirmed there also. He received his education at the Bloomfield Township rural school.

He attended the United Methodist Church at Castalia. In the late 1930's and early 1940's he was president of the Bloomfield Township School Board. Though increasingly confined to his home, he maintained an active interest in the community, national and world news.

On March 23, 1930 he was married to Vera Meyer. To this union three children were born. He farmed for most of his life except for a short time when he was a lineman for the Pleasant Ridge Telephone Company. After his retirement he continued to make his home on the farm.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Vera, in 1957, three brothers: Harvey, Elmer and Webb, a sister, Mrs. Ed (Amelia) Burt and a son-in-law, Earl Johnson.

Surviving are a son, Bill, Castalia, two daughters: Mrs. Oran (Lolita) Engelhardt, Postville and Mrs. Robert (Beverly) Cowles, Ossian, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Dale (Rubye) Reeves, Pamona, Calif.
