John Stavnes

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 1977 at St. Bridget Catholic church for John Stavnes. Msgr. Vernon J. Peters of Ossian and Fr. Karl Klein of Clermont officiated.

John Stavnes, son of Ole and Helga Peterson Stavnes, was born October 17, 1920, on a farm in Winneshiek County, Iowa. He passed away February 15, 1977 at the Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, at the age of 56 years.

He received his education in the rural schools in Winneshiek County. John was inducted into the Navy March 31, 1942. He served three years and eight months including duty in the South Pacific. Following his military service he farmed in the Castalia and Postville area for thirty years.

On May 11, 1946 he was married to Clara Sheehy at Waverly, Iowa. To this union seven children were born.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, and a brother, Harold.

He is survived by his wife, Clara, four sons: John, Fayette, Iowa; Jeff, Freeport, Illinois; Robert and Tim, at home; two daughters: Suzanne and Patricia Stavnes, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a brother, Sigurd of Timber Lake, South Dakota; and two sisters: Mrs. Phil (Noble) Geisen, Calmar, Iowa; and Myrtle Stavnes, Decorah, Iowa.

John was a member of the American Legion at Ossian and St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville. He was presently serving as the Scout Master of Troupe 41 in Postville.

The Schutte Funeral Home, Postville, was in charge of arrangements.
