Harold Nicholas Buege of Ossian died Thurs., March 15, 2001, at the Ossian Senior Hospice, where he had been a resident for the past two and one half years. He was 86 years old.

Harold was born Aug. 28, 1914, near New Albin, the son of Herman and Margaret (Fink) Buege. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church in New Albin. He also attended school in New Albin.

He married LaVina Spencer on Aug. 29, 1936, in Waterloo. Following their marriage, the couple resided in Waukon, where Harold worked on the Carl Groetzinger farm. They moved to a farm near Rossville, where they continued to farm for 13 years. From 1950 - 53, the couple operated the Castalia Tap Tavern.

In 1953, they moved to a small farm near Castalia, where they farmed until 1959, at which point they moved to Ossian. Harold worked for Francis Dehning at Silver Springs Meat Locker and then at the meat department of Brockman's Grocery in Ossian. In 1971, he started working for Early Construction Company placing telephone cable. He worked there until his retirement at the age of 65. Following retirement, Harold worked part-time for the Union Produce Co-op for several years. He also remained active gardening and doing field work at his daughter and son-in-law's farm.

Harold enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren, gardening, and watching the Chicago Cubs on television. He liked playing cards with friends and was known for teasing one and all.

He is survived by his wife, LaVina; three daughters, Betty (Tom) Frommelt of Dubuque, Mary Lou (Greg) Zweibohmer Jr. of Dubuque, and Sandy (Leon) Tieskoetter of rural Postville; and a son, Don (Sandy) Buege, Provo, UT.

Also surviving are 15 grandchildren: Barb Casey, Mike Brom, Debra Yost, Jim Brom, Lori Streit, Sharon Schmitt, Connie Finger, Alan Zweibohmer, Cindy Grutz, Christina Peterson, Cheryl Zweibohmer, Bryan Tieskoetter, Dawn Tieskoetter, Aaron Tieskoetter, and Brandon Tieskoetter; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Marjorie (Buege) Foht; and three brothers, Stan Buege, Elmer Buege, and Albert Buege.

Services were held Mon., March 19 at Ossian Lutheran Church in Ossian under the direction of Pastor Cindy Arndt. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery, Ossian.

Honorary pallbearers were the staff at Ossian Senior Hospice. Pallbearers were Bryan, Aaron, Brandon and Jim Tieskoetter, Dave Brincks and Dennis Bohr.

Schmitz Funeral home of Ossian assisted the family.
