Lillie Berentson

Lillie Berentson, a former resident of the Ossian area, died Wednesday, November 1, 1995 at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein after a short illness. She was 81 years old.

Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 6 at Bethany Lutheran Church, south of Ossian, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Richard Vettrus officiated. Ida Barness was organist and soloists were Debra Wynthein and Tom Kleppe. Casketbearers were Alvin Thompson, Dale Strand, Dennis Osmundson, Kenny Reinertson, Lloyd Barness, and Wayne Barness.

Lillie was born June 7, 1914 in rural Ossian, the daughter of Ben and Betsy (Thorbjornson) Barness. She was baptized and confirmed at Stavanger Lutheran Church. She attended the area country school through grade school and then attended Ossian High School. Lillie married Otto Kleppe, her first husband, December 31, 1935 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Lillie was preceded in death by her first husband, Otto in 1941, a sister, Alice Reinertson, two brothers, John and Conrad (infant) and her parents. She is survived by her husband, Hildmer, a son, Richard Kleppe and his wife, Louise of Oelwein; a daughter, Ethel Hilsenback and her husband, Dale of Waterloo; three sisters, Borghild Strand, Agnes Thompson and Florence Osmundson, all of West Union; a brother, Ralph Barness of West Union; her stepmother, Breida Barness of Bergen, Norway; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
