Mrs. Anna Schafee, 94, a well known resident of this vicinity, died last Wednesday morning in the hospital at Decorah. She fell at her home in Frankville township Saturday morning, suffering a broken arm, and was taken to the hospital where she was a patient until her death.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon in the Ossian Lutheran church by the Rev. A. Duane Manson. Organist was Mrs. Howard Knutson and soloist was Mrs. Duane Manson. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery with the following men serving as pallbearers: Clarence Schave, Raymond Schave, Merlin Bachman, Howard Hanson, Lawrence Schultz and Harold MacIntosh.
As Miss Anna Marie Lange, she was born Aug. 10, 1872, at Anklam, Germany, a daughter of the late Charles and Marie Gipp Lange. In 1883, when she was 11 years old, she accompanied her parents to the United States. They first settled at Red Wing, Minn., then moved to Guttenberg where they lived a number of years before moving to a farm north of Frankville which they purchased.
Mrs. Schafee obtained an education by attending school in Germany, Red Wind and Guttenberg.
On Feb. 23, 1893, she married Henry Schafee and they lived for one year at Lime Springs. They also lived on a farm in Clayton county four years before moving in 1893 to the farm they purchased in Frankville township.
They became the parents of two sons and one daughter -- Walter Schafee, who died in 1915, Lucille Schafee, who died in 1964, and Leo Schafee, who is her only survivor. Her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 5, 1950.
Postville Herald newspaper clipping from my mother's obituary collection.
Notes: Anna Lange Schafee died January 16, 1967. Walter Schafee died November 3, 1915 from a broken neck that resulted from being struck by an engine belt. Lucille Schafee died October 1, 1964. Leo Schafee died September 2, 1994. None of these three children married. According to the Decorah Courthouse Records, there was another daughter, named Hellen Schaffee. She married Fred Rollins on July 17, 1909. Fred Rollins was born and residing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the time of marriage. And then we hit the brick wall and can't get any further.
