Sister Edith Gerleman, OSF, 83, of the Holy Family Hall at Mount St. Francis, died at 3:45 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2003, at the Holy Family Infirmary.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mount St. Francis Chapel with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Edith ministered as a teacher in the Iowa schools of North Washington, Temple Hill, Dubuque (Sacred Heart, Holy Ghost and St. Mary Orphanage), Alton, Stacyville and New Vienna; Corpus Christi in Chicago and Portland, Ore. She also taught at Loras College in Dubuque and Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. She served as a chaplain at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, and as an elementary guidance counselor for the Dubuque Archdiocese.

She was born on April 25, 1919, in Ossian, Iowa, daughter of Max and Rose (Beckman) Gerleman.

She entered the Sisters of St. Francis on Sept. 23, 1934, and made her final profession of religious vows on Aug. 10, 1941.

Surviving are her sisters, Jean (Donald) Meyer and Geraldine Wallace (Alex) Conrad; brothers, Gillis (Sharon), Joseph (Mildred), and Donald; a sister-in-law, Arlene (Robert) Gerleman; and the Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared 68 years of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Richard, Robert and Gerald; and sisters, Dorothy (Alphonse) Remke, Mac (Joseph) Bushman and Rosemary Gerleman.

Memorials may be given to the Mount St. Francis Sisters.
