Calvin Spalla, age 61, of Ridgeway, IA, died on Sunday, November 2, 2014, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 8, 2014, at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Spillville, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday, November 7, 2014, and also on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the Balik Funeral Home, 211 South Main Street, Spillville, IA.

Calvin Charles Spalla was born on June 9, 1953, the son of Alois and Laura (Webster) Spalla in Cresco, IA. Cal attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Spillville and worked on the farm at home. Calvin married Lynne Stockdale on January 26, 1974 they later divorced. Calvin then married Judy Vobr-Krivachek on September 5, 1998. Over Cal’s lifetime, he built grain bins, worked in security at rodeos and events, owned and operated Spalla Roofing and Tree Service, worked at Featherlite, operated Spalla Trenching and Backhoe, Spalla Limo and Snow Removal and also at the Winneshiek Coop in Mabel, MN. Cal enjoyed being a cowboy; breaking, riding, and shoeing horses as well as branding cattle. He also liked to shoot guns and ride his Ranger. Cal never knew a stranger and loved to talk to everyone. He liked playing Santa to young and old. Cal enjoyed the company of his dog, Daffy Duck.

Cal is survived by his wife: Judy Spalla and her two children and four grandchildren, Ridgeway, IA. Two children: Tanya (Todd) Gilmore, Rock Island, IL and Derek Spalla, Ridgeway, IA,. Two grandchildren:Tayler Gilmore and Julian Gilmore. Six sisters: Laura “Doc” Spalla, Ridgeway, IA; A.J. Spalla, Missoula, MT; Lois (Mike) Blue, Bon Aire, IA; Linda Spalla, Ridgeway, IA; Rose Nelson, Cresco, IA; and Corinne Elder, Ridgeway, IA. Four brothers: Larry (Jan) Spalla, Ridgeway, IA; Alois “Tony” (Carol) Spalla, Jr., Chatfield, MN; Robert “Jesse” Spalla, Ridgeway, IA, and John Spalla, Ridgeway, IA. His mother-in-law: Dolores Vobr, Ridgeway, IA. Sisters and brothers-in-law: Maggie (Bob) Hlubek, Ridgeway, IA; Charles “Chaz” Vobr, Ridgeway, IA; Jim “Chico” (Annette) Vobr, Ridgeway, IA; Jeff (Jeni) Vobr, Decorah, IA; and Mark (Fiancée Brandi) Vobr, Ramsey, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Cal was preceded in death by parents: Alois and Laura (Webster) Spalla. His father-in-law: Elvin Vobr.
