Ray Allen Passes After Long Illness; Funeral Held Today
Ray R. Allen, 61, passed away Sunday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lester Trautman, in Postville, after having been in failing health for the past 18 months.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Schutte funeral home, and at two o'clock at the Castalia Evangelical United Brethren church, with Rev. Wayne Hargrave officiating.
Mr. Allen was born on a farm near Ossian August 26, 1885, the son of Edward W. and Melissa Cooley Allen. He spent his boyhood days on the home farm and attended the rural schools of that community. As a young man he attended Breckenridge school in Decorah.
He was united in marriage to May Clark on Oct. 26, 1910, at Waterloo, and it was here where they spent the first 3 and one half years of their married life. In March, 1914, they moved to a home near Castalia and during the remainder of Mr. Allen's life he lived in or near Castalia until his last illness, when he came to make his home with his daughter in Postville. Mrs. Allen preceded him in death in June, 1934.
He is survived by his four children, Irma, Mrs. Clifford Roulson, of West Union, Viola, Mrs. Lester Trautman, of Postville, Richard, of Moline, Ill., and Robert of Decorah; also ten grandchildren; four brothers, Charles of Castalia, Steven of Mason City, Ernest of Akron, and George of Frankville; three sisters, Cora Harvey of Castalia, Grace, Mrs. George Crabtree, of Waterloo, and Jenn, Mrs. T. L. Wheeler, of Galesburg, Ill., also a number of nephews and nieces. His wife, parents, one brother, William, and one grandson preceded him in death.
Mr. Allen was a carpenter by trade and a natural-born artist. He leaves many beautiful oil paintings as a tribute to his memory. He will be especially remembered by the people of the Castalia Evangelical U. B. church for the picture, "Christ in Gethsemane," which he painted for the church in memory of his wife, May Clark Allen.
