Ward M. Allen

Funeral services were held Tuesday in Ossian for Ward M. Allen, prominent Ossian attorney, who passed away at Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse, on January 23. Rev. W. T. Martin, pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church, Postville, was in charge of the rites; Ray R. Douglass conducted Masonic rites; burial was in Bloomfield cemetery, Castalia.

Ward M. Allen, son of George and Ora A. (Green) Allen, was born on a farm northeast of Castalia on October 30, 1883 and lived there until he was five years old at which time his parents moved to Castalia where he grew to manhood.

He attended the public school of Castalia until the spring of 1900 when he entered the Valder Normal School at Decorah and graduated from the Higher English Department of that school in June, 1901. In the fall of 1901 he entered Upper Iowa University at Fayette, and continued his studies there until June, and in September, 1905 he entered the College of Law of the State University of Iowa at Iowa City, and graduated from that institution with the law class of 1908.

On September 1, 1908 he established himself in practice at Ossian and continued in active practice for over 50 years.

On June 29, 1910 he was united in marriage with Miss Fanny F. Cornell of Ossian, and they established their home in Ossian where they have since continued to reside. To this union was born two sons, Richard N. Allen of Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Robert W. Allen, who lost his life on October 13, 1943.

Ward M. Allen was a member of the Masonic lodge for more than 50 years and in 1955 received from the Grand Lodge of Iowa his certificate of fifty year membership.

On January 23, 1965 Mr. Allen passed away at the Lutheran Hospital at LaCrosse, Wisconsin after several weeks of illness, at the age of 81 years. He is survived by his widow, one son, Richard N. Allen of Fort Wayne, Indiana, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son Robert.
