Marjorie Peterson Dehning, age 91, of Decorah, IA, died on Monday, October 6, 2014, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 9, 2014, at the Glenwood Lutheran Church, 1197 Old Stage Road, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Stacey Nalean-Carlson presiding. Burial will be in the Glenwood East Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Thursday morning.

Marjorie Carolla (Berge) Peterson Dehning was born on September 10, 1923, the daughter of Henry and Nora (Lovstuen) Berge on the family farm in the Glenwood area, east of Decorah. Marjorie was baptized in 1923 and confirmed on May 15, 1938, both at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. She attended Baker Country School and Normal Teacher training in Decorah. She then taught in rural Winneshiek County Schools, at the Pagen and Rocksvold schools. She also taught at North Winneshiek and for many years at St. Benedict Catholic School in Decorah; teaching a total of forty years. She was united in marriage to Selmer L. Peterson on Nov, 8, 1942, at the Glenwood Lutheran Church, and they had three children. Together they farmed in Glenwood Township, where Marj was a busy farmwife, mother and teacher. She enjoyed gardening and sewing clothes for her family. During the summer, Marj also attended summer school at Luther College. Marjorie was united in marriage to Harold Dehning on January 26, 1985, at the First Lutheran Church. Marjorie enjoyed playing cards and bridge, traveling to Europe and Hawaii, hand stitching quilts, tatting, crocheting and dancing. Marjorie was a former member of the Glenwood Lutheran Church and a current member of the First Lutheran Church.

Marjorie is survived by her three children: Sondra Peterson, Decorah, IA; Shirleen (Doug) Sturtz, Decorah, IA; and Mark (Jeanne) Peterson, Hiawatha, IA. Grandchildren: Brian Sturtz, Michael (Janel) Sturtz, Terry (Colleen) Sturtz, Jennifer (Chris Rand) Sturtz, Eric Oakley, Jonathan (Elisha) Oakley, Jeff (Diane) Peterson, and Heather (Dan) Wood. Great grandchildren: Nate & Jack Sturtz, Barrett Coyle, Alexi, Ronan & Ryley Sturtz, Xavier Oakley, Aria Oakley, Alex Peterson, Jayden, Rheyah & Laikin Wood. Two step-sons: Duane (Nancy) Dehning, Decorah, IA and Ron Dehning, Decorah, IA. Step-daughter-in-law: Karen Dehning, Marengo, IA. Step-grandchildren: Lorie (Paul) Slaymaker, Greg Dehning, Don (Pam) Dehning, Maria (Dean) Frana, Aaron Dehning, Teresa Dehning, Jon (Rebecca) Dehning. Step-great grandchildren: Danny (Melissa) Slaymaker, Adam Slaymaker, Shaun Dehning, Katelyn Dehning, Tyler (Jessica Larson) Frana, Dalton Frana, Ethan Frana, Cameron Dehning, Crystal (Tim) Wiedow, Kailynda White and Jordyn White. Step-great great grandchildren: Rorie and Camielle Wiedow, Trynnity Frana and Claire Slaymaker. One sister: Caryl Larson, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Don Olson, Decorah, IA, along with several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents: Henry and Nora (Lovstuen) Berge. Her two husbands: Selmer L. Peterson on April 29, 1975 and Harold Dehning on Dec. 18, 1999. One sister: LuVerne (Virgil) Snell. One brother: Lloyd Berge. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Dean Larson, Mable Olson, Kenneth Peterson, Elmer (Ellen) Peterson, Luella (Norton) Lovstuen, and Herbert Peterson. One step-daughter-in-law: Kathy Dehning. One step-son: Harlon Dehning.
