Alden T. Grinna, age 88, of Decorah, IA, died Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Barthell Order of Eastern Star Home in Decorah.Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. David Sorenson and Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating.
Friends may visit with the family beginning at 10:00 am Thursday, one hour before the service, at the church.
Military honors will be accorded by the local veterans’ organizations.
Alden Theodore Grinna was born June 15, 1926 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Gustav and Thea (Benson) Grinna. Alden was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. He graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1944, and served in the U.S Army from October 26, 1944 to October 26, 1946.
Alden was united in marriage with Esther Nesset on May 17, 1949 in West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: Mary, Steve and Susan. Alden worked as a mechanic at Grinna-Teslow Garage in Frankville, IA and then worked for the Iowa State Highway Department for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the VFW and IOOF. His interests included: fishing, game hunting, gardening, mushroom hunting and checking on area crops. He was most fond of time spent with his family and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a baby girl in infancy in 1950; his daughter, Mary Yount on January 12, 2007; four brothers: Julian, Vernon, Grant, and Marlin Grinna; and one sister, Helen Ruen.
Alden is survived by his wife, Esther of Decorah; his son, Steve (Kim) Grinna of Decorah; his daughter Susan (Steve) Youngs of Webster, NH; and 12 grandchildren: Brittany (Charles) Metzig, Blake (Stephanie) Leisinger, Thea, Nora, and Merike Youngs, Grant, Sierra, Moriah, Garrison, Stella, Sophia and Angelica Grinna; and four great-grandchildren: August (9), Henry (6), Asher (4) and McKinley (1). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, 523 West Water Street, Decorah, IA 52101, Luther College 700 College Drive, Decorah, IA 52101 or charity of the donor’s choice.
