Curtis Haugen, age 74, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, from Myodysplastic Syndrome.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 4, 2010, at the Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Wayne Hagen and Rev. Bryan Robertson presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 2:00-5:00 p.m., at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home on Sunday, and after 10:00 a.m., on Monday morning at the church.

Curtis Edgar Haugen was born on September 15, 1936, the son of Edgar Oscar and Lilly Amanda (Moe) Haugen in Decorah, Iowa. Curtis was baptized and confirmed at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Curtis attended Decorah Community Schools and later received his GED, when he served in the Air Force. Curtis served in the US Air Force from 1954-1958 and was stationed at Etain AFB in Etain, France for three years; during the Korean War. After the service, he returned to Decorah and worked at the Nordness Creamery as a butter maker and also the Decorah Creamery. Curtis joined his brothers, Ray and Ron Haugen at Haugen Plumbing & Heating Co. Curtis moved to Chicago, IL, in 1970, where he worked at Hollenbeck Sausage Company for twenty-one years, and then for Rollex Corporation for seven years, in Elk Grove, IL. Curtis married Sharon Johnson in Decorah, they later divorced and then he married Barbara Tollefsrud in Caledonia, MN; they also divorced. Curtis returned to the Decorah area in 2001. He enjoyed country music, hunting, playing cards, bowling, walking and going to stock car races.

Curtis is survived by his son: Norman Curtis “Corky” Haugen, Fairfax, VA. Two grandchildren: Leah & Oliver Haugen. His former wife: Barbara Haugen, Decorah, IA. Three step-children: Phyllis (Don) Nelson, Bensenville, IL; Debbie (John) Ralph, Bensenville, IL; and Jeffrey (Nancy) Tollefsrud, Waterloo, IA, along with nine step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. Four brothers: Gerald (Theola) Haugen, Decorah, IA; Orville Kenneth Haugen, Dubuque, IA; Dale (Dawn) Haugen, Belvidere, IL; and Roy (Sherrie) Haugen, Martin, TN, and several nieces and nephews.

Curtis was preceded in death by his parents: Edgar Oscar and Lilly Amanda (Moe) Haugen. One sister: Delores Haugen in 1950. Four brothers: Roger Haugen in 1994; Raymond Haugen in 1981; Harlan Ronald Haugen in 2009; and Clayton Haugen in 2006. Two sisters-in-law: Dianna (Marshall) Haugen in 1987 and Shirley (Kornmeyer) Haugen in 2010. One great nephew: Michael Schroeder in 2009.
