Kenneth O. Hanson, age 78, of Decorah, died on Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, following a long illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. at Hauge Lutheran Church with Pastor John Mayer officiating.

Hymn selections included "Softly and Tenderly" and "Amazing Grace." Pastor John Mayer performed "How Great Thou Art."

Organist was Jennifer Little.

Casketbearers were Greg Hanson, Randy Hanson, Brian Hanson, Dave Hanson, Doug Hanson, Davis Hanson and Daryl Hanson.

Military rites were provided by Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977, Bernatz – Symonds Am. Legion Post #163 and Hamre – Giesen DAV Chapter #8.

Interment was in Hauge Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Decorah, handled arrangements.

Kenneth Orval Hanson was born on July 10, 1926 the son of Bennie and Velma (Roney) Hanson on the family farm in Canoe Township, which was settled by his great-grandfather when he came from Norway.

He attended county school. During his senior year, Kenneth Hanson was drafted in to the U.S. Army from Oct. 1944 to 1946.

He later earned his diploma in the service and served in the Philippines.

Kenneth Hanson returned and farmed north of Decorah with his family until 1949, when he bought his own farm. He married Helen Hanson on June 6, 1949 at the Decorah Lutheran Church.

He farmed near the North Winn Road until he retired in 1983.

Kenneth Hanson enjoyed spending the winters in Arkansas with his daughter and the summers north of Decorah with his son.

He moved to the Goose Island Apartments for two years, then to assisted living for one year before entering the Aase Haugen Nursing Home for one year.

He was a member of Hauge Lutheran Church and enjoyed reading.

Survivors include one daughter: Diane Roberts and husband Wayne, Hardy, Ark.; one son: Wayne Hanson and wife Linda, Decorah; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister: Roselyn Quam and husband Arthur "Bud;" two brothers: Arlin Hanson and wife Virginia and Willard Hanson and wife Verna, all of Decorah; one brother-in-law: James Hanson and wife Betty, Decorah and several nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Hanson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen in 1973; one brother: Merlin Hanson and wife Evelyn and one son-in-law: Roger Hutchinson in 1990.
