Doris Daughton, age 100, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 11, 2014, at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave, Decorah, with Rev. Phil Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the Grand River Cemetery on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. Grand River, IA.

Friends may call after 1:00 p.m., on Friday at the Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorials may be given in memory of Doris to the Aase Haugen Nursing Home Activities Department, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, IA, 52101, or to St. Benedict Catholic School, 402 Rural Avenue, Decorah, IA, 52101.

Doris Edna (German) Daughton was born on May 24, 1913, the daughter of Ray and Odessa (German) German near Bartlett, Nebraska. Doris graduated from Grand River High School in 1931. After high school she worked for the local newspaper, grocery store and volunteered at their small library. She was united in marriage to Max Daughton on January 14, 1938 in Grand River, Iowa. After they were married they moved to Burlington, IA, and then to West Des Moines. Max was employed at the Des Moines Register until his retirement. Doris enjoyed her job at the West Des Moines Public Library and worked there for many years. She retired when she moved to Decorah in 1988 to be near her son, daughter-in-law and their families. In retirement she enjoyed taking trips with the Sunrise Club and made many friends as they traveled together. Doris has been a resident at Aase Haugen for the last six years and was proud to serve as the Mayor of the Woodlands area. She would inform people of this with the usual twinkle in her eye. Doris enjoyed all the activities at the nursing home and never missed an opportunity to take part. Doris was a kind and gentle friend and loving mom and gram.

Doris is survived by her son: Michael (Carole) Daughton, Decorah, IA. Three grandchildren: Shawn Daughton, Stevenson, WA: Nancy (Mike) Hovden, Decorah, IA; and Steven (Jeannie) Daughton, Decorah, IA. Six great grandchildren: Leo Daughton Johnson, Elizabeth, Anna & Adam Hovden, Jessica Shimek, Jordan & Courtney Skillings. One sister-in-law: Lucia Daughton, Grand River, IA, along with seven nieces and nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents: Ray and Odessa (German) German. Her husband: Max Daughton on Oct. 24, 1984. Her daughter in infancy: Mary Colleen Daughton. One sister: Hazel McClure. Two brothers-in-law: John and Don Daughton.
