Lloyd A. Solem, 65, of Marion Township, Minnesota, died in a garage at his home of accidental asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning, according to Olmsted County coroner dr. T.O. Wellner.
According to the Sheriff's Department, Solem went to his garage about 1 a.m. to start his truck. While walking back the garage door, he apparently tripped over a carburetor and fell, striking his head and stunning himself. When he did not return to the house, his wife went to the garage and found him on the floor. She dragged him outside before calling an ambulance, deputies said. Dr. Wellner pronounced Solem dead at the scene.
Mr. Solem was born April 3, 1904 in Decorah, Iowa. He married the former Olga Ellis on Aug. 6, 1921 in Soldiers Grove, Wis. A retired carpenter, he lived in the Rochester area since 1952. He previously lived in Des Moines and Decorah. Mr. Solem was a member of the Rochester Carpenter's Union and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where funeral services wer held Wednesday, April 1.
Survivors include five sons, Tillman, John and Gregory, all of Rochester, Gordon of Seattle, Wash., and Donald of Pine Island; three daughters, Mrs. Carl (Marie) Runge of Rochester, Mrs Ralph(Grace) Barker of Chicago and Mrs. Lavonne McCabe of Los Angeles; 17 grandchildren; one great grandchild; five brothers, Melvin of Decorah, Harold of Shakopee, Norris and Alert, both of Des Moines and Leonard of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and four sisters, Alice and Mrs Ernest Gruewell, both of Des Moines, Mrs Elnora Quinn of Waterloo, Iowa and Mrs. Lillian Storla of Decorah.
