Ruth Kovarik, age 47, of Spillville, Iowa, died of pneumonia on Friday, January 31, 2014, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Monday and on Tuesday after 9:30 a.m., at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m., on Monday at the Balik Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in memory of Ruth to the Dumont Wellness Center, P.O. Box 341, Dumont, IA 50625.

Ruth Ann Kovarik was born on April 8, 1966, the daughter of Alois and Marcella (Shimek) Kovarik in Decorah, IA. Ruth was a special child and lived at Comp Systems in Charles City from 1971-72. She then attended Abner Hendrickson and Decorah High School, graduating in 1987. She worked with Spectrum Industries in Decorah until 2011. While in Decorah she lived at Opportunity Homes. In May of 2012, she moved to Dumont and lived at the Dumont Wellness Center, where she received loving and excellent care. She always enjoyed meeting new people and remembering birthdays. Ruth loved taking trips to Branson, Missouri and to Nashville, Tennessee, and loved country music, especially Conway Twitty. She was an avid baseball fan and went to Cubs, Twins and Brewers games. Ruth enjoyed going out to eat, watching TV and old TV programs, attending mass at St. Benedict’s on Saturday afternoon and loved keeping busy.

Ruth is survived by her mother: Marcella Kovarik, Spillville, IA. One brother: Tom (Diane) Kovarik, Grayslake, IL. One nephew: Louis Kovarik and one niece: Evelyn Kovarik. Cousins: Mary Stika, Larry Kovarik, Wesley Kuboushek and Leonard Kuboushek. Uncle and aunt: Vic & Betty Shimek.

Ruth was preceded in death by her father: Alois “Louis” Kovarik in 2010. Her grandparents: Alois F. and Emma Kovarik and Ed & Mary Shimek. Aunts and uncles: Rose & Jim Kuboushek, Celia & Willis Brady, and Ed & Viola Kovarik.
