Sally J. Zimmerman, 80, of Waukon, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends called from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Honorary casket bearers were her granddaughters and granddaughters-in-law. Casket bearers were her grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Online condolences may be left at martinfunerals.com.

Sally Jane Zimmerman was born Aug. 31, 1933, on the Burr Oak farm of her parents, Clyde and Zeralda (Dahl) Sharp. She attended rural country schools in the Decorah area and graduated from Decorah High School in 1952. She married Walter Frederick Zimmerman June 15, 1952, at the Methodist Church in Decorah. Sally was later baptized at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Her greatest joy was working with her husband of "nearly 50 years" with his career and raising their four sons. Sally was a member of Zion United Church of Christ where she was very active in its ladies' circles. She was a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Center where she also served on the advisory board for several years. Sally also was a member of the Red Hat Society and was very active with Trees Forever. She enjoyed playing cards, going to the boat, shopping, cooking, baking -- especially bread -- and boating on the Mississippi River. Her favorite times were spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her four sons: David (Jeannine) of Waukon, Brian (Julie) of Hiawatha, Gary (Susan) of Niwot, Colo. and Todd (Teresa) of Naples, Fla.; nine grandchildren: John (Jessica) Zimmerman and their children Mason and Carson, Kristina (Ben) Gralund and their children Hannah and Addison, Kelsey (Matt) Slay and their children Jillian and Sawyer; Maria (Bret) Paulsen and their children Garrett and Chase, Kyle (Laura) Zimmerman, William and Ingrid Zimmerman, and Jamie and Joe Zimmerman; three sisters-in-law: Shirley Rose and Arlene Rooney, both of Waukon and Sylvia Hayes of Ariz.; and a brother-in-law, Charlie Bakke, of Waukon.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter, who died in 1998; four sisters: Andrey Rognlien, Gloria Carter, Jean Harvey and Nancy Griffin.
