Vernelle Mae Dostal, age 86, of Decorah, IA, formerly of Waucoma and Ossian, IA, died Sunday evening January 5, 2014, at Gundersen Health Center in Lacrosse, Wisconsin.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 10, 2014, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma, IA, with Monsignor Cletus Hawes presiding. Burial of cremains will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Waucoma, IA.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Thursday, January 9, 2014, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, IA. with a rosary at 4:00 and scripture service at 5:00

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Arlin Falck Assisted Living Van Fund, 911 Ridgewood Drive, Decorah, IA 52101, or donor’s choice.

Vernelle Mae Dostal was born on April 20, 1927, in Waucoma, the daughter of Edward and Helen (Kunt) Jirak, Sr. Vernelle attended country school and later Rudolphinum High School in Protivin, where she graduated in 1944. She continued her studies at Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. In 1946, Vernelle married Roy Schmitt, they lived in Jackson Junction. Roy died in 1974. Vernelle worked as Head Cook at Turkey Valley School from 1960 to 1978. To this day students have come up to her and commented how great she was as a cook and how they loved her meals. She was a life-long member of the Catholic Daughters and Rosary Society of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma, Iowa. In 1978, she married W.A. Dostal and moved to Bryan, Texas and later to College Station, Texas. They moved back to Ossian, Iowa in 1997 and in May of 2008 moved to the Arlin Falck Assisted Living in Decorah. Vernelle and W.A. enjoyed many trips together. They enjoyed driving the Texas country roads, sightseeing in California, old southern states, Washington D.C., Wyoming, and two trips to the Czech Republic. Vernelle loved to crochet and provided all her family with tablecloths, bedspreads, and doilies. She loved her garden and flowers. She continued to garden on their patio even after their move to Assisted Living. Her greatest love was for her family from the youngest to the oldest. She gave her family many happy moments and memories.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband: W.A. Dostal, Decorah, IA. Three sons: John (Mary Jo) Schmitt, Nisswa, MN; Thomas (Mae) Schmitt, Jackson Junction, IA; Steven (Brenda) Schmitt, Katy, TX. Two daughters: MaryAnn (Dennis) Rosendahl, Des Moines, IA, and Kathryn (Brian) Fleming, Lincoln, NE. One stepson: Chris (Deb) Dostal, Jacksonville, FL. Eleven grandchildren: Tami (Greg) Staut, Englewood, CO, Terry (Deb) Rosendahl, West Des Moines, IA, Melissa (Chad) Snyder, Urbandale, IA, Mike (Susie) Schmitt, North Mankato, MN, Nichole (Troy) Steele, Pequot Lakes, MN, Kristin (Paul) Stoffel, Mankato, MN, Angie (Darrin) Redmond, Iowa Falls, IA, Heidi (Bryan) Wormley, Nevis, MN, Nathan Schmitt, Katy, TX, Eric (Jessica) Fleming, Lincoln, NE and Emily (Aaron Louchart) Fleming, Chicago, IL, and twenty-two great-grandchildren. One sister-in-law: Eleanor Dostal, New Hampton, IA.

Vernelle was preceded in death by her parents: Edward and Helen Jirak Sr. Her first husband: Roy Schmitt. One grandson: Matthew Schmitt. One brother: Edward Jirak Jr.
