John H. Flatland, 95, of Ridgeway, died Monday, Aug. 19, 1996, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip OLson and Associate in Ministry Ginny Olson. Martha Olson will be the organist.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Christine Bockhorn, Mari Anne Danielson, Barbara Knetter and Jennifer Little. Casket bearers will be Eric Bockhorn, Ted Danielson, Tim Danielson, Phillip Johnson, Tom Knetter, Don Little, David Vick, Robert Vick and Roger Vick.

Burial will be at the Lincoln Cemetery of rural Ridgeway. The Fjelstul Funeran Home is handling arrangements. Visitation will be held at the church Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

John Flatland was born Nov. 14, 1900 in Lincoln Township of Winneshiek County, the son of Kjittle "Charlie" and Mari (Hotvedt) Flatland. He was baptized Dec. 2, 1900, and confirmed May 9,1915, both at Lincoln Lutheran Church. He attended rural schools of Lincoln Township, and also attended the Luther Academy at Albert Lea, Minn.

On Dec. 2, 1926, John was married to Julia Halvorson at the Gunhild Halvorson home in Madison Township. The couple farmed in Lincoln Township until 1957, when they moved to Ridgeway. Julia died April 8, 1973.

John was married to Gertrude (Gesell) Johnson Jan. 24, 1976, at Peace Lutheran Church. She died Nov. 13, 1988.

John was active in Lincoln and Peace Lutheran churches, and served on the parish realignment committee. He also served on several boards, including the Township Board of Education and the Winneshiek Co-op Creamery Association. John also served on the Ridgeway City Council.

John spent some months at the Aase Haugen Home and recently made his home with his daughter, Harriet, and her husband, Roland. He was a avid reader. He enjoyed singing hymns in Norwegian and reading scripture.

Survivors included one daughter, the Rev. Harriet Danielson of Ridgeway; six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two step-sons; a niece, Lorraine Arnold of San Jose, Calif.; and a nephew, Charles Flatland of California.

John and Julia Flatland had two daughters, Harriet and Mary.

The Rev. Harriet Danielson and her husband, Roland, of Ridgeway, have one son and two daughters: Ted and Stephanie Danielson of San Diego, Calif., and childen Joshua, Jacob and Nathaniel (deceased); Dr. Christine and Eric Bockhorn of Sherwood, Wis., and children Katrianna, Kelsey and Daniel (deceased); and Mari Anne Danielson of Aurora, Colo.

John and Julia's other daughter, Mary, was married to Gordon Danielson. She died Aug. 29, 1971. That couple had two daughters and two sons: Jennifer and Don Little of rural Mabel, Minn.; Barbara and Tom Knetter of Fond du Lac, Wis., and daughter, Naomi; Matthew (who died in 1994) and Kristy Danielson of Spring Grove, Minn., and children Taryn and Samuel; and Timothy and Vickie Danielson of Monument.Colo., and children Keely, Alana and Mary.

The two step-sons are Stan Johnson of Cedar Falls and Phillip Johnson of Ridgeway.

John Flatland was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; one daughter; one grandson; two great grandsons; two brothers, Ole and Thorkel; one sister, Anna Vick; and two nephews, Jimmie Flatland and Marlin Vick.
