Bertha Hovey, Former Rural Teacher, Dies
Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Hovey were held Friday, June 13 at the Orleans Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Wm. Thalacker officiated with Bradley-Lindstrom Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Elmer Gerber was organist, and also accompanied the soloist, the Rev. Roger Hjelle of Viroqua, Wis.
Mrs. Hovey died at LaCrosse Lutheran Hospital June 10 at the age of 82 years.
Bertha M. Scott was born in Orleans Township on November 25, 1892, the daughter of Helge and Bertha Lande Scott. In her youth, she attended Winneshiek County rural schools and also Valders College in Decorah after which she taught in rural schools for a time.
She was united in marriage with Orville Hovey on October 12, 1920. They lived on the same farm in Orleans Township for nearly 45 years before retiring to Cresco in 1964. She was a life long member of the Orleans Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband who passed away on December 28, 1973, a daughter, Mrs. Elmer Linderbaum, and two brothers, Andrew and Theodore Scott.
She is survived by a daughter, Sylvia (Mrs. Orland Quandahl) of Cresco, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Toftey of Kanawha, Ia. and Mrs. Amelia Iverson of Clarion, Ia.
