Alvin Mashek, age 77, of Spillville, IA formerly of Cresco, IA died Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday August 6, 2013 at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Cresco, IA.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 8:00 P.M., Monday, August 5, 2013 at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, IA with a Rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 7:30. There will also be visitation after 9:30 at the church on Tuesday.

Alvin Walter Mashek was born on October 10, 1935, the son of Walter and Leona (Zeman) Mashek of Calmar. Alvin graduated from Calmar High School and worked at Bucheit Produce in Calmar. He went on to serve in the Army from 1958 – 1960 and then worked at Donaldson Company, Inc. in Cresco for 32 years, retiring in April of 1998. He later worked for Graphics in Calmar and most recently partnered with his two sons, Wayne and Randy, opening the A&W/Long John Silver’s in Cresco in 2002. On October 8, 1960, Alvin married Marie Frana. They became the parents of four children, Lori, Karen, Wayne and Randy. Marie died on June 26, 1995 and is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Cresco. On July 11, 1998, Alvin married Phyllis (Novak) Riehle at St. Wenceslaus in Spillville. In his free time, Alvin enjoyed collecting many things especially post cards, researching his genealogy, and during Ragbrai was Marie’s trainer and support person as well as the housing coordinator for Ragbrai riders. The things that Alvin loved most were gardening, collecting post cards, vacations with his family and he had a passion for dancing. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Spillville American Legion and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

Alvin is survived by his wife: Phyllis, Spillville, IA; four children: Lori Peterson (Mike Neleman), Cedar Rapids, IA, Karen (Ronald) Scanlan, Ashton, IL, Wayne (Kelly) Mashek, Cresco, IA, Randy (Brenda) Mashek, Cresco, IA; grandchildren: Natalie Scanlan, Teresa Scanlan, Alicia, Andrew, Phillip, Eric, Michael, Sarah, Macie and Thomas Mashek; step-children: David (Kathy) Riehle, Calmar, IA, Richard (Janet) Riehle, Wilmington, DE, James (Kathryn) Riehle, Decorah, IA, Ronald (Leah) Riehle, Calmar, IA; step-grandchildren: Jill (David) Kistenmacher, Dawn (Keith) Schechinger, Robert Riehle, Hailey Riehle, Hunter Riehle; step-greatgrandchildren: Abigail Kistenmacher and Riley Schechinger; brothers-in-law: Lawrence Frana, Maple Leaf, IA and David (Jackie) Frana, Walker, MN; sisters-in-law: Leona Stortz, Mabel, MN, Sylvia Hayek, Fort Atkinson, IA, Gladys Ferrie, Harmony, MN, Eileen (Pat) Sweeney, Elma, IA.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Leona Mashek; wife: Marie June 26, 1995; brother: Ronald August 9, 1996; brothers-in-law: Joe Stortz, Ray Hayek and Ray Ferrie; step-son: Michael Riehle; step-great granddaughter: Harper Schechinger.
