Maynard Hovey

Maynard Hovey died early Monday morning, Dec. 7, 2009, at home in Cresco. Funeral services are Friday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Cresco. Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco from 4 until 7 Thursday evening, and also one hour prior to services at the church. Burial is in the church cemetery.

He was born Nov. 5, 1923 in Winneshiek County, the son of Philip and Hannah (Hanson) Hovey. He was baptized Nov. 25, 1923 at Decorah Lutheran Church and confirmed July 3, 1938 at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway. He attended rural schools and graduated from Cresco High School in 1941. On July 28, 1950 he married Colleen Bergan at Orleans Lutheran Church. Five children were born to this union.

Maynard lived and passionately toiled on the family farm all his life until he and Colleen moved to Cresco in 1987. His farming evolved from horse drawn machinery to today's modern technology. After moving to town, he continued to go to the farm everyday to help with what ever work he could until this last year.

Maynard was very active in the Orleans Church performing various jobs, such as treasurer, secretary, janitor and gravedigger for many years. He particularly loved to socialize with his friends and neighbors after Sunday church services, often resulting in his children becoming tired of waiting in the car and walking home along the gravel road.

Known for his sweet tooth, he was always ready for a cup of coffee and a few cookies. He enjoyed visiting with his coffee buddies at the Park View Cafe and later at Suzie-Q's. He was also an avid reader and a faithful viewer of TV westerns, always with a big bowl of buttered popcorn.

He thrived on visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They will remember him for his whisker burns and big hugs.

Survivors include his wife Colleen, and children, Sonia (Dean) Ollendieck, Cindy Hovey (Rick Bisbey), Randy (Peggy) Hovey, Clinton Hovey, and Marian (Dean ) Wiedeman, all of the Cresco/Ridgeway area; one sister, Kathryn (Vernon) Spilde, Decorah, and two brothers, Harlan Hovey, Decorah and Ken (Roseann) Hovey, Atkins; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Phil and his wife Rose, sister, Wilma Barth and her husband Galin, sister in-law Norma Hovey, sisters Carol and Phyllis in infancy, and great-grandson Tyler Jason Hovey.
