Funeral Services For Sam Hanson Held on Saturday
Funeral services for Sam P. Hanson, 87, retired Hesper Township farmer, were held Saturday, June 24, at the Hauge Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. with burial in the Hauge Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Heifner officiated. Steine's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hanson died Thursday, June 22, at Smith Memorial Hospital.
Pallbearers for Mr. Hanson were Ole Flatland, Harlan Hovey, Norman Flatland, Roy Belz and Maynard Hovey. Music was provided by Diane Stortz, organist, and Mrs. Robert Peterson.
The floral committee was comprised of Mrs. Harlan Hovey and Mrs. Herman Stegen.
Mr. Hanson was born Jan. 23, 1880, in Norway, the son of Hans and Nellie Hanson. He was educated in Norwegian schools and at the age of 18, came to the United States and Winneshiek County where he lived all of his life.
He was married March 25, 1911, to Bertha Olson in the Glenwood Church. Of the couple's nine children, eight survive: Nellie, Mrs. Henry Falck, Decorah; Lloyd Hanson, Hesper Township; Helmer, Central City; Norman, Morton, Minn.; Sylven, Ridgeway; Melvin, Rochester, Minn.; Marie, Mrs. Francis Greening, Rochester, and Albert Hanson, St. Paul. One daughter preceded him in death.
Other survivors include 29 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two brothers, Carl Hanson, Sumas, Wash.; Ed Hanson, Bellingham, Wash., and two sisters, Hannah Hovey and Nellie Severson, Decorah.
Besides his daughter, his parents, wife, three sisters, three half sisters, one brother and two half brothers preceded him in death.
Mr. Hanson was a member of Hauge Lutheran Church.
