Decorah Journal, and reprinted in the Postville Herald of Thursday, 29 September 1921.
The touch of a wire, 110 volts of electricity, a wet footing, a gasp or two, and Roy Haslip of this city met almost instant death in the basement of the new Holmberg & Erickson building this (Wednesday) morning about eight o'clock. He was working for Austad the contractor. The basement was so dark that yesterday Albert Austad and Ed Holmberg went across the street to T. M. Halverson's shop and got an electric cord extension, which they attached to a socket and thus secured light in the front part of the basement. This morning Roy Haslip attempted to move the electric lamp on the cord. What he touched that gave him the shock is not quite clear. However, 110 volts went thru him. He was standing on damp ground, which aggravates an electric shock. Albert Austad heard him gasp and broke the wire. Then Haslip fell to the ground. Three doctors were summoned and gave him heart stimulants but it did no good. It appears he died almost instantly.
Roy Wilcox Haslip was born in Allamakee county, Dec. 5, 1896. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Haslip, who survive. One sister, Pearl, and a brother, Leo, also survive.
The deceased spent a year in the army in the late war and only yesterday was a member of the firing squad that fired the salute over the grave of Raymond Broghammer. His sudden death at the beginning of manhood is a tragedy that brings a terrible sorrow to the family and excites a warm sympathy among our citizens who knew and respected the young man.- Decorah Journal.
