WELL KNOWN PIONEER PASSES

Augustus Hanson, Civil War Veteran and Pioneer Hardware Man Dies Monday

Monday afternoon about five o'clock, death claimed another of Decorah's well known pioneers, Mr. Augustus Hanson, who passed away at the home of his son-in-law, after having been in failing health since April, suffering from Acute Brights disease and weakening of the heart.

The deceased was born in Hakendahl, Norway, Dec. 27, 1843, and came to America with his parents in 1853, coming direct to Winneshiek county, and Decorah where he ever since had made his home.

He was one of the boys who wore the blue in the civil war and did his part to help preserve the union. He enlisted for service on Feb. first, 1862 in the war then going on, in Co. H. 1st Battallion, 16th Inf. U. S. Regulars, and was mustered out of service in April 1865, just two days before Lincoln was assassinated. The regiment he was a member of went through some of the greatest battles of the war, among them being the Battle of Shiloh, Corrinth, Miss., Perryville, Ky., Bowling Green, Ky., Nashville,Tenn., Bridgeport, Ala., Huntsville, Ala., Stone River, Chicamaugua, and he was with Sherman's army on his famous march to the sea.

Mr. Hanson was married to Miss Carrie Nelson on June 24, 1866, and to this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters. The wife and mother passed away in March 1919, and one son Henry passed away some years ago. The surviving children are Louis Hanson, Mrs. W.B. Coup and Mrs. W.H. Holmes, all of Decorah, and the sympathy of the entire community is extended to them in the loss of this beloved father. One sister, Mrs. Tilla Larson, of Chicago, also survives.

In the death of Mr. Hanson the community loses a most loyal and respected citizen. For forty years or more he had followed the hardware business here, and the friendships he made were many. He retired from the business several years ago to take a well earned rest. He was ever true and loyal in matters of citizenship through the days of peace as he was in the time of war when he went out and defended the flag on the battlefields of the south. He was a man of high qualities of mind and character and to know him was to be his friend. He was a mighty good husband and father, possessed of a congenial nature and he held the high regard and confidence of all who ever had the pleasure of his acquaintance.

The funeral services will be held this Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.H. Holmes and services will be held at three o'clock in the Norwegian church. Rev. O. Glesne will officiate and interment will be in the Norwegian cemetery.
