Arland G. Emery, age 87, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday, July 27, 2013 peacefully at his home.Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 2, 2013 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, IA with Pastor Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, with Full Military Honors.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday, August 1 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church and on Friday after 10:00 A.M., one hour before the service, at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is serving the family.
Arland George Emery was born August 14, 1925 at home in Canoe Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the son of John and Vera (Conklin) Emery. He attended rural country school through the 8th grade. Arland entered the U.S. Army on July 26, 1944 and reported to Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was in the 11th Armored Division which was under General George Patton’s 3rd Army. He met General Patton while serving in Europe. Arland carried a flame thrower across Europe for his division. He was honorably discharged on June 19, 1946.
Arland was united in marriage to Annette L. Trimbell on July 31, 1947 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church Parsonage in Harmony, Minnesota. This union was blessed with nine children: Julie, Trudy, Marsha, Steven, Arletta, Debbie, Becky, Sandra, and John.
Together they farmed and then Arland worked in carpentry for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. He loved “doings”, picnics with his children and grandchildren. He also drove a school bus. Arland was a member of Burr Oak Lutheran Church and the American Legion Club Post No. 299 of Mabel, MN.
Arland was preceded in death by his parents John and Vera; brothers Thomas, Roger, and Dean; and sisters Lenora Seliger, Betty Guhl, and JoAnn Emery.
Arland is survived by his wife Annette and their 9 children: Julie (Jerry) Reckward of Castalia, IA, Trudy (Scott) Barnes of Calmar, IA, Marsha (Tom) Whalen of Preston, MN, Steven (Laurie) Emery of Highlandville, IA, Arletta (Wayne) Tweten of Cresco, IA, Debbie (Larry) Cook, Becky (Edward) Lyon and Sandra Mitchell (Greg O'Brien), all of Decorah, and John (Carol) Emery of Austin, MN; 30 grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; one brother Jessie (Phyllis) of Mabel, MN; and two sisters, Nell Ewing of Waterloo, IA and Beverly Berg of Davenport, IA.
